According to a Mexican ancient legend, we travel to Mictlan (place of the dead) after we die. As we journey through Mictlan, we progress though 9 distinct levels with the aid of a guardian dog named Xoloitzcuintli depicted in the art piece. Other symbols in the piece include the Zenzontle (mockingbird) representing the human soul, the Axolotl (Mexican salamander) representing the confrontation with death itself, and the cactus representing our resilience to live in hostile environments.
