Printmaking in Oaxaca
Oaxacan culture has an ancestral custom and tradition in the form of community work. In a similar way, the printmaking workshops are manifested as a collective workspace where various artists collaborate to create their works of art. As Federico Valdez, Oaxacan artist, puts it well: “Engraving always needs the cooperation of various artists. As an artist, you are open to the opinion of others.”
Printmaking is a process.
- Engravers use a range of specialized tools to hatch a matrix made of wood or metal.
- Prints are created by transferring ink from the matrix to a sheet of paper.
- The process of printmaking enables the production of multiple impressions of the artwork.
